  1. Their were many merchant ships converted to AA ships, these included cargo ships and ferries. A ferry the Ulster Queen is credited with the first kill using radar controlled AA on Artic Convoy PQ18 when it shot down a JU 88 through cloud.

  2. A total missed point on the reason why the tanker bridge was amidship. The reason is very simple that there is a requirement that under the Collison Regulation for a lookout to be kept ahead, this is defined as a distance where the bow does not shadow any small vessel. The more modern tankers and bulk carriers achieve this by having a very tall superstructure, not found on containership who have a forward or amidship accommodation. The problem with a high superstructure is that it restricts the places the vessel can access.
