Captain Burnett of HMAS Sydney was an experienced officer starting his sea service in 1917. He spent a great deal of time on various Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy ships. He returned to Australia at the outbreak of war. HMAS Sydney was his first command. The reason for the close distance to Kormorant will never be known as there were no survivors from HMAS Sydney.
