When the Allies succeeded in establishing their beachhead, Rommel was of the opinion that the war must be ended promptly at any cost. He said to me once, “Much better end this at once and live as a British Dominion than be ruined by continuing this hopeless war.” He was opposed to a Eurasian block and favoured cooperation with the Atlantic powers. He felt himself to be an heir to the traditions of the West, and I think he died for this conviction.
