  3. The most important way to confuse another vessel was to make the direction of the ships head hard to discern. Professional seafarers look at a ship and by the spacing of the masts , hull shape make the heading obvious. This is due to the collision regulations that determine the spacing of the mast lights. This will give the U Boat a good guess as to the heading. If you can also discern hold spacing, accommodation, forecastle you will get a size estimate of the speed. A simple but effective addition, especially for a slow ship was to paint an excessive bow wave on the bow. Any paint scheme that obscures these items will make the estimates difficult.
