During Operation Compass in North Africa General O'Connor notes after the fall of Tobruk he went to the Italian Artillery position and saw the guns still there and all surrounded the all the gunners dead, none had retreated. O'Connor had a great deal of respect for the Italian soldier as he had fought with them in WW1. O"Connor later in the war was apologising to Senior Italian Officers captured during the advance for the poor conditions they were being held in. They replied I believe you have been very busy General. General Rommel of course got his Pour Le Merite in WW1 for killing Italians.
