The 3rd Minesweeping Flotilla of the Kriegsmarine had an interesting story, they were taken to Magedeburgh, transported by road to the Danube and sailed down the Danube to the Black Sea. They were given orders to stop the Soviets supplies across the Kerch Straits, This they did with remarkable success with assistance from E Boats also send down the Danube. The called it nautical street fighting at often metres apart, some times operating so close that they were below the elevation of the Russian guns. They adapted what they could including using mine fields to control access and borrowed some multiple rocket launchers “Stalin Organs”. The achieved control of the Kerch Straits. In 1944 as the German army retreated the minesweepers were used to evacuate the army, taking up to 450 men at a time. They then retreated to Bulgaria and scuttle their ships. The return of the men through Bulgaria and Yugoslavia to Austria should be made into a film. They returned to Germany and were reformed. Source : Swastika at Sea After WW2 Bekker an ex Kriegsmarine wrote the book with the assistance Chief of Operations Executive at the German Naval HQ.

@patrickkelly8095 There was no OIL available in North Africa in WW2, it was not found until the 1950's

Not all British Troops were evacuated at Dunkirk. The 51st Highland Division stayed behind and fought with the French Troops including De Gaulle, something he did not forget. They were supposed to be evacuated from St Valery but this never happened. Most were captured and surrendered to Rommel, but a few escaped and went south. Other stragglers, RASC , RAF and others went to St Nazaire were some the fortunate (including General Allan Brooke)were evacuated. Others died in the disaster of the sinking of the RMS Lancastria,(7000 to 9000 estimated) a fact that was kept secret for many years.

@patrickkelly8095 there was no oil in North Africa in WW2

I would say that the British and Commonwealth Forces were the most diverse ever.

Japan suffered from a shortage of all ships even before they invaded Malaya. This is because the European war started in 1939 and Britain had chartered or bought all the ships available. The Tanker Company owners were the major oil companies and Britain and Norway.
7
@johngurlides9157 He claimed descent from a Greek Admiral
6
@matthewbadley5063 By 1917 German troops were sending food parcels home as there families were starving, the German Fleet could not sail often due to lack of Coal. There were major problems in Germany. The Blockade worked.

@ThatGuy-mt7hq Like your idea, there is a simpler explanation , with Bradley in charge of Patton, Eisenhower had a layer between himself and Patton. Easier life than having to control a maverick. And Eisenhower was a politician.
4
@colinhunt4057 Kummetz had been informed that the coastal defence was antique and not in use.
4
@chaptermasterpedrokantor1623 Yes along with Brunei and Canada. They are trained at Edinburgh Castle. I am not sure about New Zealand. I know that the 51st Highland Division lent there Pipers to the NZ Army for the march past Churchill and AllanBrooke at Tripoli in February 1943
4
That might have effected his confidence.

@KnightofAges Churchill requested ships from the US to move grain from Australia and Roosvelt refused.
3
@Edax_Royeaux During WW1 the Australian at Gallipoli the troops used water tanks made by a Melbourne company called Furphy. Because of the gossip and tall tales swapped at these tanks it is now an Australian term for rumour, gossip and tall tales.

Greg Hallett is a Kiwi

Claude Auchinleck said that when in command of the 8th Army he had 24 nations in his force speaking over 40 languages.
3
@ThatGuy-mt7hq Eisenhower sacked Patton and gave his job to Bradley!

2
The proximity fuse was a British inventions further developed by the US. It was part of the Tizard Mission to the USA

Churchills Biographer Boris Johnson writes of Churchill: “No other politician has taken so many apparently risky positions. No other politician has been involved in so many cock-ups… flourishing in spite of them.”
2
@EllieMaes-Grandad Yes, rationing makes it passable for the resource to be shared fairly, totally against the Tory where its how much money you have that counts.
2
Can they read?

TIK Maybe you should correct Wikipedia, its a better response

@Edax_Royeaux I know, thanks, I thought the true Australian story would be a little wind up for TIK, accusing him of Furbies, or Tall tales. I worked on a project West of the Shetlands Islands in the late 90's and in 500m of water depth located a ship on the bottom with a deck cargo of tracked vehicles. The ship was later identified as being from WW1 and was sending supplies to Russia, these were earth movers.
2
In 1913, Hitler, Trotsky, Tito, Freud, and Stalin all lived within 2 square miles of each other in Vienna, so it must be true, maybe in Part 2?
2
I think the item missed was Tizard Mission where the British gave the US war winning technology boost including Radar with the magnetron Tube Alloys with Nuclear know how Proximity fuses Jet Engine Code breaking This helped speed up the technological advance, Germany didnt even share radar with Italy, they did some sharing with Japan but this was plans and individual items without the knowledge to assist in its development.
2
A Catty comment?
2
I think you need to look beyond hindsight. This action occurred in Artic water in mid winter, very little light, poor visibility, with gale force plus winds. There was no real ability to accurately find your vessels position. The only real criticism was the poor use of radio to pass on sighting information.
2
Britain and Russia cooperated in Iran.
2
@manco828 The only fully mechanised army in Europe prior to WW2 was the British , and they had a fairly small army.
2
TIK the odd Montgomery action was an essential action. Montgomery was ordered by his commander, General Alan Brooke who was to become the Commander in Chief of the British Army (CIGS). The problem was the Belgians on orders from there King laid down there weapons without any notice, leaving a gap between the British Army and the sea. Alan Brooke ordered Montgomery to move through other nearer formations to fill the gap and stop the German advance. This he did successfully. Montgomery was with the possible exception of Alan Brooke the best general in the BEF. If you were to visit his Division in the 1930's come the weekend you would find his division training on Salisbury plain. all the other soldiers would be at home or at the pub. He was determined to train his troops and plan. During the phoney war he trained his troops, again more than any other. Montgomery was a great General. there is much criticism of Montgomery but most originates on the other side of the Atlantic.
2
It s simple, its all Hitlers fault.
2
@DonMeaker Blame the seabirds? If only they could have been trained to defecate in the right place. The German Goverment may have its priorities wrong, they again planned for a short war.
2
@brianlong2334 Did a calculation from Miri in Borneo to Yokhama, 2400 Nautical miles, that is 10 days at 10 Knots or 8 Days 8 hours at 12 Knots.
2
Napolean did not do well with logistics, look at Moscow 1812 and before that his invasion of Egypt.
2
If you want an example of a General who understood logistics study Wellington, both in the Peninsula war and prior to that in India.
2
TIK, you need to read General Allan Brookes diary, that will explain so much of the plans your missing. It will explain Winston Churchill, he did the same as the Captured German General and rewrote his history post war. He had many harebrained schemes and tried his best to stop D Day right to the last minute. Avoid about the first 80 pages, the phony war part is very boring.
2
@boll0cks45 you have an appropriate name
