I was discussing exactly this point with my friend in currently in Kyoto. Trump is putting the USA first, therefore Japan must also put its own interest at the fore. It was Japan agreeing to devalue its currency at the behest of the USA back in the late 1980s that started Japan's problems. I say Japan should do all it can to strengthen the yen. If my country of Nigeria wasn't so messed up right now I would glady recommend Japan set up trading relations with it. Nigeria has resources, Japan has the technical know-how and manufacturing chops. Both countries can really benefit each other. I do not think Japan is benefitting much from the USA and not for a very long time!!

@huwhitecavebeast1972 well it does seem that the close proximity to the USA isn't offering any benefits right now or soon with the incoming tariffs. And the USA market shouldn't be the end all of trade in either case. The world is a big place and there are many markets that Japan can sell to. If my home country had its shih together, it would be a valuable trading partner, especially with a 221 million population and growing.

@huwhitecavebeast1972 I think the plaza accord meeting had a lot to do with the bank of japan's decision to intervene in its own monetary policy though.

@LucasPereiradaSilva considering the amount of oil Japan can buy from Nigeria, I expect low forms of tariffs if any, Japan has more manufacturing power so there is nothing to protect. Now think of all the sweet crude Japan can buy, gas too. Nigeria has so much gas that it has spent the last half century flaring it away. It's almost a joke how resource rich Nigeria is.
