While virtual ones would randomly find another victim to scam, the real ones have to heavily rely on friends or relatives of the victim to obtain the ransom. To be extra sure, demand the kidnapper that they talk to the victim directly and be sure to ask for very specific details on how the kidnapper want the ransom to be paid.
