Singapore here. My son was forced to do up to 10 hours of homework a day at primary school. During a very extreme period I brought this up to his form teacher. Her reply was that my son is slow, and the other children are able to do this in 2 - 3 h. Of course, I know from other parents that it's not so. On top of the school hours from 7:30 to 13:30 nearly all children also have tuition. The worst in my son's class was 18 h a week, most had around 6 - 12 h.

Many foreigners I know are actually packing their bags. Prejudice and "Chinese coloured" patriotism especially among the young generation, which usually should be the most adventurous and open social group, are obvious. The atmosphere in Singapore has changed a lot.

Could you also have a look at the military exercises the US and South Korea hold every year in autumn. NK soldiers, actually needed on the fields for harvesting the crops, will then be relocated and occupied observing these operations.

The real reasons for the incredible wealthy Singapore from about 2000 can be found in the early 60s. The reason why the US is having so much trouble now can be found in the early 80s.

@eggplant240 Even my 12yo son feels it. He's mixed, people don't know he's Singaporean. I do not know how long I can still find happy "explanations" for him. That might be over when he 14, 15.

@lzh4950 Singapore did well, because the neighbors were busy skimming off the money from their own people.

You are 100% spot on. A country with no manufacturing industry is a poor country.

@harukrentz435 Vegetables have become expensive and are not good. This is 1 example. I believe the Singapore government learned during the pandemic, that having at least a basic amount of production in particular for food and medical items is an essential to have. Besides of that, with industrial production you add real physical value to a raw material. Same applies also for science and technology. With for example financial industries you add paper value. Where you invest into physical assets you will always have something in your hands, even if there are emergencies, or crisis. You will still have the house, but with an NFT as an example you have NOTHING, and nobody can be fed.

As for Singapore making to have a child expensive and making education more difficult had a vastly better effect than the 1 child policy in China with all their BS exceptions

My neighbour at that time when I lived in Guangzhou had to pay $ 150k for getting permission for a 2. child

Having dirty energy might be more expensive in the long run.

@johnstonewall917 I think you are right. Looking ahead however there is a real need for extra capacity, and also to replace the current gas burning power plants. I guess there will be no choice ... and this seems a long term solution.
