Germany had about 60 million integrating 17 Million, and the living standard was not that drastically different. Yet we still have not bridged all the differences. That would be a very difficult task, and you'd be better off learning from the biggest German mistakes, and do it more gradually. But it will come. You cannot cut into pieces what belongs together.

  2. I understand, from our perspective it is hard to understand women are treated as less than animals, just like objects. How do these women survive with no mental illnesses? In Germany or the US some can get already bulimia, depressions or suicidal if somebody says bad words at them in a text message.   3. The West has done extensive analysis. In the first two weeks of a war situation, North Korea could do a lot of damage to South Korea, in particular the Seoul area. After that it would stop pretty quick, and they would be forced into a defence situation. After 4 - 6 weeks the US had converted the entire North Korea to farmland and rocks, without using any atomic bombs. I can hear in him the same sentiments that many East Germans have/had.

There was politician A who promised with glowing words a paradise and golden landscapes after the re-union. Politician B tried to warn us, and highlighted the critical points. He said what politician A was saying are empty promises. He said it would be a long and stony road, not a paradise, but we can do it. The answer to him was an assassination attempt. Not hard to guess whom the Eastern Germans elected, isn't it? The economical gap and the cultural gaps in between both Koreas is even wider.

  10. You are wrong on several accounts, A Wa. - East Germany had never starving people (except with the war). - The income was about 1/4 of what people in the western part earned. In between the Korean parts the proportion is more like 1 : 100. - Til today, except some highlight cities all areas in the eastern Germany part suffer from their people running away, especially the young ones. The same will probably happen to NK, by the way. - In 60 years NK Korean speaking has diverted from the way SK Korean speak, so have many social and cultural traits. - Don't underestimate the brainwashing that has happend. And I explicitly mean not only the communist propaganda.

When it is raining, for example. Or from my place to T4 at the airport, 1:40 h, with luggage ... hmmm. Or imagine buying grocery with two small kids in tow. And because the rents are increasing to intergalactic levels, things can get difficult for small businesses. For example, many food stalls at popular places have to close now. They simply can not pay the rent anymore. Someone who has to pay 10,000 $ rent has to cook a lot of plates food before he starts to earn for himself. And as we are on it, I really regret the downfall of all these Mama-Papa stalls with their often individual delicacies. They had been replaced by food chain food. Last time we paid 23 $ at a so-called economical rice stall. There was nothing special on our 3 plates. A single room to rent is at least 800 $, not in the center but in an area such as Bedok. How they want to encourage young couples to marry with current housing prices is a mystery to me. I feel many businesses have used the opportunity "covid" for cranking up their prices unreasonably.

And considering the Soviets had taken away there almost anything that had any industrial value, this tells us something. I know it sounds like exaggerating because I am German, but it is just a fact. The only country that could fairly keep up was Hungary, but they had been tackled by the USSR. Coming back to NK, I noticed it is almost always those from the upper class on display here. They can cross the border without getting shot or being put into prison, some of them run back and forth several time, all of them had some sort of trouble in NK, short before they made their final decision to get away. These are not real representatives of the common people in NK. They had a comparably good life.

  25. For example many Eastern Germans missed the warmth of the society and neighbourhoods. SK is a highly Americanised society, I hear NK people (defectors) saying 100% the same. Wide parts of SK nowadays is Christian. Not the liberal Euro-style of Christianity, but the US style with the sweaty preacher who thinks he has eaten wisdom with big spoons. This is far away from the original pragmatic way of Korean Confucianism. If I had to say I'd make use of German experience and employ some of the German politicians, society and economical experts for advice. I am confident their advice would not be following the German model of opening the wall and everything is re-united. It's better to prepare the people and the economies.

Tibet, some parts of North-East India, Taiwan have been allocated the same role. Even in Siberia they are active. China is building a ring-fence around China, a ring-fence that consists mainly of weak and vulnerable countries.

I have been pointing out on the 5-eyes alliance and the high density of public camera surveillance in the UK and the US since years, but almost everyody thinks my arguments are ridiculous. Not my problem. These countries are only superficially democracies anymore. And to answer your question, yes, China has surpassed these systems by far.

We see several badly affected countries, which incidently have the worst governance. The US, UK, Brazil are examples. On the other hand there are well governed countries such as South Korea, Taiwan, New Zealand, Germany, Finland, and more.

  50.  @ChrisHyde537  These are fact. North Korea is a mountainous country, they only have about 25 % farm-able land, insufficient to provide for 25 million people. The slightest natural disaster can throw them back for years. On the other hand, as I was told from first hand by people who worked there, the conditions are incomparable to before. They did improve since the new king is ruling, in opposite to the fairy-tales the Anglo-Saxon media wants to maintain. One of the biggest issues they have is that they fertilise the land mostly with untreated human feces, since the west does not sell fertiliser to North Korea. This is a serious problem, it contains a lot of dangerous pathogens, and also parasites in North Korea.

Compare the NY region to the Appalachian region. I have been to East German right before the actual reunification. I was shown around in workplaces, hospitals, was taken to several houses of people, etc.. The worst I ever saw in my life was the pollution of a river called Sale, and the brown-coal mining around Bitterfeld. Against that the West-German mining was almost a holiday resort. They were not really poor materialistically, they did have everything. From starvation like Nk there was of course nothing. In the end it was still a Germany, therefore they did better compared to the other communist states. But man, they knew to party!

  77. Physical presence has nothing to do with productivity. It is a common misconception everywhere in Asia. It is not possible to work 12 h every day with high intensity for longer term I doubt even 8 h of high intensity work are possible on long term. High intensity is more like 4 - 6 h per day, for the rest you still work but try to fill it with lesser demanding tasks. And that is what a good productive day would be like.

  86.  @FergusScotchman  I was even in the GDR several times, and then again about 8 months after re-unification. The people in the East were not poor in the sense of having nothing much. Everybody had enough, and usual daily life was not that bad at all ... in opposite to many other countries behind the iron wall. However, as someone else above explained, the process of unification was a partially pretty painful one, and is still not completely closed. And it was not only some internal problems with the unification. Other countries used recklessly our resulting weakness in economical areas, and that we had to put focus towards the east for so many years. The difference 40 years created in between the 2 Germanys was remarkable, I was never aware that people are changing so much in 40 years. The differences in between the 2 Koreas are even much starker.

Person A will jaywalk whenever there is no police or camera. He will try to bend the rules anywhere anytime, same as he bends the bushes or the fence in the center of the road divider to still slip through. He will ride bicycle on the Autobahn if he believes there is nobody watching. He will beat the red light whenever he does not fear a punishment. That makes it necessary to execute as much total control as possible. That is the difference.

There is daily media exposure in Germany as well, such as travel reports, political issues, food culture etc. for almost every place in the world. Thinking it is about memorizing coloured patches on a map is not, that is not even half as important. Rote learning is not much in Europe.
