  4. When my family lived in China, my son was twice in a local hospital. The methods used were simple, the facilities simple, the doctor somewhat unfriendly. However, both times the treatment was absolutely appropriate. That was around 2014/2015. The thing I did hate was that Chinese people think they can interrupt a consultation at any time, pop into an ongoing surgery every second to ask insignificant questions, and that virtually everyone expects preferential attention, probably because they paid a bribe.

  10. I have met couples who paid hefty fines. The top was one women in Guangzhou who admitted she paid more than USD 100,000 to have her third child, plus the undertaking to get sterilized. I have met women who were second and third wives to rich men, with the only task to have a child for him. These kids have only a part-time father. I have met families with children that were not registered. These children can not go to school, had no access to any kind of support. There must be millions of hidden children in China. One of these families lived in my neighbourhood. They have 1 kid officially and 3 more unofficial, which were shifted regularly in between the parents and the 2 different grandparents.

In the 18 months that I lived in an upper middle-class condo WITH security, electronic pass and cameras all around the compound, in my and the two neighbouring blocks: - two times people were convicted who planned to break into flats - one time someone fell from the water drain pipe from the 5th level that he tried to climb up in order to break into a flat, this person died on the spot - one time someone was convicted who tried to make children from the condo's playground follow him - one time when I was coming back from work someone was fiddling at my front door lock, when I stepped out of the lift he run away via stair case. That was just near me. The security was very careful incidences like that were not made known to the condo public. You could only know if you were a neighbour. If you asked them nobody ever knew anything. While it does seem that violent crime is relatively lower compared to many other countries, stealing, robbing, scamming, cheating is rampant in China. The police often does not really care about certain crime, and that is the first step many criminal acts do not get reported and do not appear in statistics.

  15. I concur with every single point. It's 100 % accurate. Allow me to add a point you only briefly hit on. The crime is lower in China as compared to other Asian countries. But we shall keep in mind that a certain type of crime often remains unreported, and then uncounted for. Pick-pocketing, serious scamming incidents, small theft, vastly overcharging for goods or services are such examples. Hardly anyone would go to the police for it, and criminals calculate with this fact. As a foreigner your chances for recovery of the damages are close to null anyway, even in cases where the culprit is known. But violent crime is not a big problem in China, as it is for example in South Africa.

My wife was fit 3 days after childbirth and did not need anything special. She's Singapore Chinese. Her relatives and friends also tried to talk her into all this traditions. Our upstairs neighbour was told to eat 13 eggs per day and filled up to the brim with Ginger soup. Sometimes we heard her crying. After the month she came out she looked sick.Happy baby.

  17. I was there for work from 2014 to 2015, saw, learned, and went back to Singapore. Singapore is tiny, and many people as narrow-minded as the country is small. I can hardly call the government democratic as how we mean a democracy to be. But: I can live with dignity, and in peace along with the locals and people from many other countries!   24. A while back I saw an amazing interview with an American of Chinese origin. He re-opened a factory that was bankrupted by their incapable management. Long story, not important here. Someone asked him: Would you be ready to help the people around this area here, employ local people and source your materials locally? Not go outside and relocate departments to China? He said, not by word but by meaning: "Listen, first and foremost you have to understand I am Chinese, and I always will be. If there is something that I can do that helps my country, I will do it without hesitation." This is the situation, these are the people that you are believing you integrated well. I am grateful to that man. For once someone spoke the truth.

The issues are not people defecating outside, or scams, or incapable drivers. This: - A very very strong bond with old traditions and hierarchies - Japan is one of the worst places on earth to be a woman. To see this you'd have to be longer there.

I.e. the no. of homeless is extremely high, the Oxicontin drug problem is a fact, and that schools are funded by the level of tax money raised in that area is causing a wide gap in education quality.

  34. In Germany we neither see pregnancy as a sickness, nor delivering a baby. And that is why, Arno. If anywhere in the world you need to stay in a hospital, then you may learn quickly how to appreciate the European standard. In most Euro countries is so much better as compared to the vastly costlier US system, too. Albeit I have to say that I did not find it half as bad in China as it is described here in the video. I know only two hospitals outside of Guangzhou. They were not as nice or luxerious, but I can't complain about the procedures. The absence of privacy and being practically handled as an incapicated person are really bad, though. These people do not know dignity as we know it.

  58. Here are my 5 suggestion to make you Chinese girls really feel better: 1. Stop using that whitening stuff. These are chemicals which are not good for your skin. People are healthier with a bit sunlight exposure and that means a bit tinting. It is scientifically proven. 2. Stop today walking around constantly looking at your phone screen. The world is much much bigger and more beautiful than a hand phone screen, and you won't see so many things otherwise. 3. Find the guy that you like and not what your relatives want from you. They don't have to live with him but you have to live with him for the rest of your live. 4. Start exercising moderately. Exercising does not hurt you, make you suffering or cause pain. And if it does then your body is going down already. Sweating is actually healthy! I see more kids becoming bigger and fatter in China. Don't become like the American or Australian girls, huge and fat. Do a regular bit of bicycling, aerobic dance with music if you like, or some yoga exercise. You will soon feel much stronger and better than from creams and pills. 5. Chinese girls are beautiful. You really don't need to look like Korean, Japanese or Western. Why do you want to be someone you are not? Blonde or red hair or blue eyes do look soo horrible on you. Highlight the nice features that you have.

Many would be rather astonished about why you want to ride a bicycle with her or go for a swim, and why you do not fancy to see her busy on Wechat the entire day. There are couples in Singapore who sit an entire evening at their dinner literally not speaking a single word together except the food order. They do like branded stuff, they do not mind spending $ 2000 on a Prada bag even if it is made from cheaply plastic material, and even if they have 10 of them already. When you go for holiday they will love to find the best shopping center but not for example hike up the mountain with you. They rather take a selfie at the bottom of that mountain, to then develop amazing leg stamina shopping 12 h non-stop. I lost any interest on any western girl right after I came to Singapore.   90. I do not believe that the happiness level is a direct result of work stress or competitiveness. If I am getting a positive outcome at the end, I am 100 % ok even under tougher conditions. That means, if my work is appreciated, both emotionally and materially. But if I work hard and I still can not move forward, for example I have little or no chance for getting a nice apartment, or I have to pay my nose for the education of my children, or I have a degree but very little chance for a decently payed job and I still have to live with my parents, then I sure will be loosing motivation. After some time I eventually will give up fighting entirely, and I will just do what I am supposed to do, no more and no less but rather less. The worst is if I'd see no future for my family. Then I will be really unhappy. Look at the list. It reflects these points I'm making quite well, so I believe. BTW. it's exactly the mistake that Singapore has now started doing. People are still overall happy but I sense unhappiness more and more. Things are getting rapidly more expensive but salaries don't really increase since a few years. People start to think there is little in for them in the future.

  110. I am in agreement with what was said here in this video. I lived in Guangzhou for 18 months. Of course it is also a generalisation. I am sure among the millions of southerners there are some people who are genuinely looking for and are capable of real friendship. What was sort of new to me is the northern Chinese are different. I never really thought about it but it's true. From the very first time I travelled to China in 1995 I always liked the north better. In Guangdong generally there are 3 circles of relationship. The innermost circle is the immediate family. The second circle is usually the wider family only. Very few non-family members would be ever considered into the second circle, most people don't have a single "stranger" belonging into this group. It is also possible to expel members of the wider family from the 2. circle. The third circle is everyone who could be useful. It can be someone someone who they do business with, it can be what we would call a colleague at work, or that can be simply someone a girl likes to go shopping with occasionally. These are people they call friends. Everyone else simply does not matter. It's the reason as why donations from Chinese to international aid organisations are very few only, or why it matters very little to cheat outsiders. Or for example why many tend to ignore a person lying on the road who is in need for help, as what we see occasionally in the news. The concept of social relationship is different to ours.

  111. The kind of appliances used, ok, it is just different. I also don't use a dishes washer here in Singapore for just 3 people. The demand for dishes sterilisers can be explained with the really miserable quality of the Chinese water. In Europe or the US we don't need that. But what really surprised me is the tiny size of Chinese bathrooms. Also the miserable state of most kitchens compared to western kitchens. It is hard to believe there is so much tasty food coming out of that!

People make their own tea and bring it to work and everywhere. What I don't like in Asia: Almost everywhere the tap water is not potable. If you are coming from Europe or NA you are used to not worry about the tap water. Here I recommend to everyone visiting not even brushing teeth with it. Few exceptions, like Singapore does have potable tap water, which I am glad about. Some middle and upper-market houses in China though do have a second water pipe that is supposed to be potable water. I did take that water but not without a bit of bad feeling. .

One person even said to me straight out: You will do what we want you to do (replicating recipes), and if there is then time left, then you can make your experiments. I learned about dumb arrogance more than in all the rest of my life. Another thing, the people. I liked to work with the colleagues, the teamwork is most of the time really good, I enjoyed that part. But they will do whatever a higher position person asks them to do. However mad and idiotic does not matter, they will follow and do everything, never bring up concerns or objections. It's a highly destructive behaviour in an R&D environment. If the current virus crisis is based on a lab mistake, I can fully comprehend how that could have happened. They do things even fully knowing it's wrong.

To a minor degree it is also your public esteem. Face is mainly your public esteem, incl. your good name. It's not very economical, but for the few weeks of cold it's a real blessing to have. Driving in China is about the worst in the world, it's beyond believe. When I look at Chinese traffic it seems a cynical joke that China has been allocated the highest average IQ in the world. Even Africans show more co-ordination and foresight than Chinese.
