The problem of Russia is a big land and few people (144 millions only) to defend it. Ukraine (44 mil) would be a nice aid. And why not all ex commie block. Even for now there is no danger or intention that US to attack Russia (or vice versa), no one grants you in the future an evil leader will not do even that. From both sides. That's why ANYBODY is permanently looking for alliances. The question is, who will attack first to stop political alliances. Well, you have the answer, Russia already did it, in Georgia and Ukraine. Russia failed politically and started wars.
