You couldn't possibly make "1000 planets" to explore. It's just simply not possible. Unless you develop the game for 20 years. Maybe Star Citizen will have this!
But, these type of "open world" games would be MUCH better starting small but with tons of things to do, details to discover and actual things to explore (secrets that aren't mentioned from quests, or zone tutorials or maps).
This was a bit WAY TOO MUCH, but I remember one of the paths you could choose for your character in The Secret World (legends) was Illuminati, I think, and a bunch of quests were places to go within the city that were these insane puzzles. Again, a bit too much for the average gamer, but they felt truly cryptic and based on real life stuff. Like there was one puzzle where you had to do 4 chimes I think, but they were actual tones and you kinda had to know music (sheets and everything) to "figure it out". That or look up a guide, of course.
I feel these things are what makes a game fun.
