Is this the same CEO trying to push NFT ideas one or two years ago? He is a complete dickhead.
However, I don't entirely agree with you on this one, Louis. I agree with the sentiment, core idea. The basis of it. But as something "against ubi" as a specific argument is pretty flat because this is not the first (nor the last) time this happened and they are not the only ones. I'm not saying it's ok to do it since everyone does it, I'm saying because everyone does it... are you going to tell people to literally stop playing any "somewhat popular non-single-player" videogame out there? It's not realistic.
Also, the game was tied to online from the get-go. From its conception the idea of the game is trash because of that exact fact. Maybe people who bought it and now can't play it learnt their lesson (hopefully) of not buying a game that is only tied to online servers in the future. I'd bet some did, but most didn't and they will get upset they can't play TC today, and buy TC40 tomorrow.
Not defending Crappysoft on this one, but also the playerbase for that game was already low compared to anything else so it makes sense to be a cuck and shutdown the servers for this game if the costs of maintaining it are higher than the earnings. And we all know these shitty companies are NOT going to release these "dead games" ips/code for people to mod/open private servers so they can keep playing them.
The last thing is, and this is not to blame the customer, did they know it was tied to online stuff? Or does the game have some sort of "single player" so the players thought they could still play it offline? I remember trying to play the game for 20 minutes before uninstalling (got it for free on their platform) because I got stuck with a truck or something. Idk, I can't remember but I remember a shitty experience, I got bored and removed it. The thing is when buying for this game and subsequently buying The Crew 2, did players know about this? Because if they did, is not like they deserved to be screwed over, it never is, but at some point some responsibility needs to happen.
And this is an issue that is disguised, because a lot of games are tied online for "account backup", and "save your progress" instead of letting me use my 64MB Memory Card. And also cross-platform stuff, and the excuse of co-op/multiplayer.
I'm only interested in one IP by them, but that has died over years as well and turned into mobile hype, The Division. That is not enough for me to support such shit company. But at some point, if that isn't today already, all the other companies are going to do the same and any game we have a "choice of choosing" won't be a real choice at all.
