This video rubs me the wrong way and I can't think exactly why or maybe I'm just not smart enough. But I'll try to lay out my thoughts and maybe they will make sense, but I am open to be entirely mistaken.
You mention he doesn't get money from a sponsor on this video but if I remember correctly, back when I watched LTT (more on this later) they would have TWO sponsored bits per video usually and Linus himself had stated several times that a lot of the money they get is from direct sponsorships AND the subs/floatplane revenue and LTT Store, not the ads as much (It's been a WHILE so I could be 1000% off on this, correct me please).
You also mention (paraphrasing) that he does this even considering his big business with employees and such, kind of like "doing it because they're so good and cool" and this is where I personally have an issue where I am not sure if I'm just being stupid or I have a valid point. He was months ago in a video from GN stating all the inaccuracies and a bunch of "not so morally/ethically great" actions. He was already a big dawg on top of the tech-tube sphere and instead of driving things forward, they decided to slop. Now, until a Steve2 appears and calls out Steve from GN as a man that is not transparent/shady and/or inaccurate in their results and such, I will keep trusting what they say. I will not trust LTT again. I understand we should give people the opportunity and a second chance to do better, but I personally have a very hard time coming to terms when someone who was supposed to do something in a certain way, didn't do so. And I don't mean a possible mistake where, let's say, under testing SOMETHING HAPPENED and their numbers are bad and then they reissue the video saying "yeah we were off because XYZ, these are the real numbers". That can happen, it could happen to anybody! That is a forgivable mistake. Like the same "mistake" that you had with your employee, or your employee made when uploading the recovery data video. That is more than understandable. But it's different when say you let him upload something, he fucks it up because it's something new to him and he doesn't know, you blame him instead of yourself despite not teaching him anything and maybe you punish him (hypothetical). THAT in my eyes is a mistake that I have a really hard time coming back from. And that is how I felt with LTT. It was a good source that I trusted, even used their forums and all. After that, I can't go back. And he's not the only one, MKBHD is another one. It's like asking people to trust EK Waterblocks again under the promise that they are now going to do better.
I am NOT saying they're bad people, deserve failure or anything of the likes. I in fact commented this in their SECOND (important for context) "apology" video. He was making a statement to "haters and people that wanted them to go down". I said, I don't want you to fail. I want you to keep your business running and improving and growing, but I personally feel disappointed and will no longer watch your content (all channels).
The fact he made this video is very commendable, but is not the first time he would make a video that goes "against certain interests". He's built the channel around that and he has the leeway of doing so now as a big name. He could perhaps make or break your brand as well (depending on which). But this video makes it sound like he's some sort of unsung hero and we all should love him because of it when in fact what I stated above happened. Some people might've stuck with them, some people might've forgiven them and that's totally fine. Good for them and I'm glad. But I can't get that out of my head just because of 1 single video with some good/FOSS/FUTO software.
And to "prove my point" sort of, you should've made like 3 or 4 videos about JayZ2C already, becuase they have made videos (recently) about good free software, how to use them, etc. though perhaps not FOSS. And yet you didn't. To be clear, I'm not saying it's WRONG or that you should make it, I'm just saying that it feels unfair/unfortunate in a certain way, if that makes sense. Probably it doesn't and this comment will be taken the wrong way. I'm responsible for this comment and I wouldn't mind getting pinned for people to butcher me in the comments if I'm completely wrong.
Rewatching your video just in case I forgot something, I want to add one more thing. You say you respect the fact he makes this video "anti-google" which would basically be anti-his-employer. Now, I'm not saying this is the REASON or they're doing it out of greed or anything but I mean floatplane is their platform and I wouldn't be surprised if they said "Oh no, part 2 got taken down, well you can watch it on floatplane". Now, this is NOT WRONG or bad. It makes total sense, and maybe does not have any malice in it either, but that is not exclusive to the fact that at some point, even unconsciously, indirectly and maybe with good intentions, has a bias. Like you have with them including FUTO software. Again, not saying you do it with that purpose, been watching your channel for a while and I "know" (trust) you are not like that, but perhaps there's a bit of bias internally you can't shake off. If people "wake up" and start moving away from google and they go to, say, floatplane... then that's great for them.
And overall, Linus has never "completely sold out" either, so saying "he made a video opening people's mind and doesn't see a dime" is like... maybe. I feel there's something there but can't articulate anything on it.
