@mrkuilko That said, most of the reporting tends to be "this hamlet/settlement has been liberated". Which in the grand scheme says very little about the actual tactical fighting and movement. And usually the people who talk tactics usually point out obvious elements like "Ukraine is likely to move here, because the position is elevated over the town they want to capture. That sort of knowledge is as old as warfare itself. Pop culture even understands these things, as shown by a particularly well known space opera - "I've got the high ground Anakin".

@draco84oz A siege is a bit different than an active battle. Considering, sans civvies, combat losses from both sides averaged out to under 6 troops per day for both sides combined. Civilians lost ~3.8 people per day. Bakhmut, on the conservative estimates is over 300 KIA for both sides per day. Typically 2-3x causalities exist past KIA, so just total causalities is probably 900-1200 per day. Verdun averaged ~2450 casualties per day for both sides, with ~980 of those KIA. So Bakhmut in terms of KIA per day is about 1/3rd of what Verdun was... and that's just insane to think about. So it's just a different sort of thing. Some historic sieges eclipse over two decades in length.

Sometimes telling your opponent exactly what you're going to do is the best disguise out there. Hide it in plain sight. Ukraine "I'mma smack you straight in the mouth". Russia "He's lying" Ukraine "SMACK Russia dramatically spits out a tooth and blood "Time to start establishing blocking divisions" Russian ground forces holding the front "Blyat, what?"
