  1.  Jack Bonello  Nah he is referring to the time period where the military officers were assigned based on status, friendship in court or if they were deemed to be of noble blood rather than their actual battlefield capacity. Social Class would determine your rank in the army and soldiers rising through the ranks were looked down upon. Quite the difference from the merit based system modern armies employ today where pretty much everyone at the top has gone there through the lower ranks.
