Also teaching in China, in the middle of the country. Last week almost half the kids in our primary school were home sick, quite a few of them had pneumonia and high fever which was a little bit concerning. This week almost all of them are back to school just like normal though. I had a lingering cold myself for 2-3 weeks but it was very mild and I just worked through it.

In China, yes. They were required to get a COVID vaccine or they would not be allowed into most schools and kindergartens.

Most likely these are people that already booked and paid for this cruise, furthermore the cruising company are not offering refunds mind you these are pretty expensive trips so my guess is not everyone has the insurance to cover it and don't want to waste all that money.

For most people it's like a common cold but obviously there are exceptions. Hopefully you will be able to avoid re-infection or have a milder one next time.

Am I the only one being a bit worried that everyone seems to completely trust the numbers coming out of China? Xi and the communist party have repeatedly stated it's about time to get back to work and in an effort to save the economy and then we miraculously see a very rapid declined in new cases. They have repeatedly denied foreign experts and scientists access to assist them. I mean I live and work in China usually and I can't wait for this thing to blow over and get back to work but to me it just sound too good to be true. And of course having lived in China and reading the Chinese news claiming HK protesters are CIA trained hooligans you do tend to take everything that comes out of China with a huge chunk of salt. I sincerely hope the numbers are correct but I highly doubt it and I would be very careful to make any scientific claim based on them there just isn't any transparency in China.

Why so many asymptomatic cases you ask and why they are so worried? I live in China and the government does NOT count asymptomatic cases into the official COVID stats that is the sole reason why they have so many asymptomatic cases. By categorizing mild cases as asymptomatic local government officials can save face because the official COVID cases will be lower since asymptomatic cases are not seen as COVID cases. I read 97% of cases in China are asymptomatic while the rest of the world is less than 50% this is just a way for the government to save face and downplay the spread of the virus. Has nothing to do with science and virus behaviour it's purely political. The reason for people going into quarantines so far away even when tested negative is because they have been in contact with someone that has tested positive and is expected to might having the virus and by transferring these people out of the city and sometimes out of the province if they turn up positive they won't be counted into the Shanghai stats and it will be easier for Shanghai authorities to adhere to Beijing's demands of zero community spread of COVID. If they are in another province they won't be counted as Shanghai cases so this is just a clever way to push the numbers down. The Chinese government has said they expect ZERO-COVID community spread that means all covid cases have to be the people that are quarantined not the ones locked in their home. So the government are taking people that are considered high risk with exposure to already positive individuals and transfer them out of the city so if they do turn up positive they are not counted into Shanghai's stats because they are not in Shanghai anymore. That's how you reach zero-covid you just transfer all covid cases out of the city and boom no more covid. Chinese politics in a nutshell.
