  6.  @Lamin_G  I don't need a lawyer to tell me what the IAEA report says, it's readily available on their website and it's in English - I have read it myself. On the very first page it says: the effects on the environment and people are expected to be negligible. I don't doubt Mr. Gao's intelligence it's just if there is something wrong with my body I go to the hospital to see a doctor, not a plumber. My point is his profession doesn't invalidate his claims but at the end of the day he is a lawyer discussing nuclear science, I would have liked to see a nuclear scientist as a guest talking about the risk. I would have expected more scientists to step forward and say it's not safe, not just Chinese scientists but surely if this is such dangerous thing there would be scientists from all over the world speaking out. This is not even making the news outside of Asia.

  8. There is 8400g of Tritium in the Pacific ocean, there is 3g Tritium in the Fukushima wastewater. If you are concerned about it you should never have fed seafood to your son in the first place.

  9. Science is never 100% sure of anything, as new research develops new thoughts are adapted and old ones discarded. The world used to be flat now it's not, science changes all the time.

Also it will be released gradually over 30 years and tritium has a half-life of 12.33 years. These are all facts that you can easily find yourself online, I totally respect and understand people are worried but 3g of tritium in a pacific ocean that already has 8400g over 30 years doesn't sound like a big difference to me. But hey I am just a random guy on the internet and not a scientist.

  12.  @Lamin_G  I guess we see what we want to see, I personally like Terran don't understand why there was a lawyer there, I suppose he was supposed to argue to legality of the whole situation but he ended up discussing the science and he clearly had not much to input, wasting time talking about Carbon-14. Even High schoolers know the human body contains carbon-14 and is naturally occurrent in all agricultural products. Perhaps for you this was a move of brilliance for me it was pointless, anyone that has studied Chemistry knows C-14 is not a concern here, Tritium is the serious and harmful element that we need to be careful about.

  16. Yes it's true they have no more space to store it and none of their neighbours wants to help them store more or provide funds to build new storage facilities and with IAEA saying it's safe the option to release it into the ocean makes most sense to them I guess.

  18.  @mailhanyi  He mentioned countries not individuals, there are concerned individuals everywhere that doesn't mean the country disagrees. Just because there were protests by individuals in Korea doesn't mean that Korea as a country disagrees. In fact the Korean government has stated Korea's support of the release. If you are going to claim a country disagrees then I'd expect to see an official statement from the government of said country condemning the move. So far I've seen the Chinese government making such statements but that's it. Perhaps it's a matter of definition but I do find it misleading when you claim a country is against it when said country's government has officially stated support. There will always be individual concern of course I am not saying all Koreans are cool with it but as a country their official stance is dictated by their government and they have said they are cool with it.

  19. I think you are overthinking it, he is talking about China because the Chinese government has condemned Japan for how they release the wastewater. The Korean public is not happy but the Korean government supports Japan's action. So far there are only two national governments that has said this is bad and that is China and Russia. Other countries some of the population is unhappy but the government has not made such statements.

  22. How can IAEA be sure about something they have never experienced? Because Tritium has been released into the ocean for a long time. There is 8400g of Tritium in the pacific ocean already and less than 3g in Fukushima wasterwater. Did you even listen to the facts presented or did you just click the video to argue online?

  23.  @wwbren  It does, the nuclear watch dog with the most prominent experts and scientists in the field will be on site to make sure everything is done correctly. Would you rather we let 5 monkeys be in charge of it instead? Or maybe you are the kind of person that goes to the Zoo when you need a surgery? If they are going to do it might as well do it correctly and have a third party present.

  24. the IAEA is a part of the UN, they have no authority. Did you think Putin stopped his invasion of Ukraine when the UN said stop? The UN cannot really do much, they can say what they like and don't like but that's about it.

  25. ​ @Ace-zm4tb  I suppose it comes down to trust then, you apparently claim the Japanese government are not well known for how they deal with things. I don't share that opinion, where I am from we have no problem with the Japanese, sure they did horrible things in WW2 but so did the Germans and we get along with them just fine. I do however have the experience living in China for extended periods of time so I do know where that sentiment comes from. I am not Chinese though so I don't share that resentment or distrust. Sure the government could have covered something up, nothing is impossible but the Japanese are the first line of people to get exposed to the consequences so I doubt it. Maybe I am in the minority but I don't find their solution to dump it into the ocean weird at all, the IAEA has set protocols for how to safely discharge nuclear waste water into the ocean for a reason, because it's common practice for nations with nuclear powerplants. I would agree I would find it odd if Japan were the first nation in history to do so but truth is it's already common practice to dump nuclear wastewater into the ocean, hence why there is already 8400g of Tritium in the pacific ocean because the nations around the ocean have been dumping it already for decades. Is there a possibility there are other substances present? Sure, but that is also a possibility for every case of every nation doing so and we have been allowing them to do so for decades. Also I don't believe the IAEA would allow it should they find a problem with it, they are on-site 24/7 monitoring the release if they have no issues with it then I am assuming it's all safe and in good order just like every other nation doing the same with their Nuclear wastewater.

  32. Save money, it's much cheaper to release the water and let the ocean dilute it than run it through a plant or factory to dilute it slowly over time.

  33. There are 3g of Tritium in the Fukushima waste water. The pacific Ocean already contains 8400g. The 3g Tritium in Fukushima will be released over 30 years. It really won't make a big difference.

  36. ​ @therensdns31415  I am not saying there aren't more elements out there that we haven't discovered yet just saying that trying to claim there are 200+ radioactive elements in the water when we only know 118 elements in existence and only 37 of them are radioactive is just spreading fear and misinformation on purpose. With your way of reasoning we could all claim there are millions of radioactive elements in the water because "theoretically" there could be. I suppose there could also be a dinosaur in the water because theoretically I am sure there could be creatures around that we cannot see with our human eye or perhaps because we can create new species in labs so we cannot rule the possibility out. If you want to be an apologist for the unnecessary spread of fear and misinformation that's fine by me, don't just expect the rest of us to swallow it whole hook and sink.

Japanese people did not decide to release the water, their government did, a lot of Japanese are against their government in this. But you are showing that your resentment and hatred of Japanese people, as soon as I see that I know your thoughts are fuelled by your emotional hatred of the Japanese and not in rationality.   38. The water is not safe, it will be safe once it's diluted which it will be when you release it into the ocean. I suggest you read up about Chemistry and dilution if you want to know what it is and how it works.

  40. The issue is it's not about the science, the IAEA have already said Japan follows all protocols when releasing water, why are there such protocols in place? Because like you mentioned every country with a nuclear powerplant releases nuclear wastewater. Like you said it's nothing new at all, there is 8400g Tritium in the pacific ocean, the wastewater in Fukushima has less than 3g in total. It's a political issue and it's about fear, the public living around the area there are worried about the consequences which is understandable and from the political side the Chinese government has it's own score to settle with Japan so they are not going to let an opportunity like this go to waste.

They called the scientists and experts of the IAEA, the experts from IAEA and 11 nations have gone to Japan to Check. Everyone says it's safe so why wouldn't the government trust the scientists?

The IAEA are on site 24/7 monitoring the release. If the top experts and scientists in the world cannot find anything else in the water then nobody can.

  56. Disregarding their neighbours that already let tritium out into the ocean from their nuclear powerplants. I mean what would the S. Korean government say, hey I know we let out twice as much Tritium as you have in Fukushima from our own Nuclear powerplant but this is not acceptable, only we are allowed to do it. Also as far as I know only the governments of Russia and China have made official statements condemning the action so far. Australian and Korean governments as an example have said they support the Japanese government's decision. Politically it seems it's mostly China relations that will suffer but those were not that great to begin with, the biggest disaster is the reputation of the Japanese fishing industry, people will be very unwilling to consume Japanese seafood, no matter if it's safe or not for sometime. It's going to hurt the fishing industry severely.

There is currently already 8400g of Tritium in the pacific ocean because the nations around the ocean have been dumping their nuclear wastewater in the ocean for as long as they've had Nuclear powerplants. Tritium has a half-life of 12.33 years so it will eventually disappear. I know it sounds bad but 3g over 30 years when there is already 8400g there, it won't make a big difference.
