Me: Oh no we're all doomed. Visualpolitik: Quotes numbers from Chinese state owned newspapers. Me again: Oh I see you have a new sponsor.

They did, yes. Their Premier Li Keqiang even said China has 600 million people with an income being less than 140 dollars a month.

@dr.lyleevans6915 Yeah, That's China for you - rich country, poor people.

@DineshTwanabasu No 140 dollars in China it not equivalent to 1400 dollars in the US LOL wtf. Been living in China for 6 years rent in a first tier Chinese city is 400-500 US dollars a month AT THE VERY MINIMUM and this is considered a good price. If you live in a second tier city you will be very lucky to get a rent below 200 dollars a month. 140 dollars does not even allow you to pay rent in most Chinese cities. Most of the people with this salary will live with their family as they lack the funds to afford buying or renting their own apartment. Hell just go to a MCdonalds in China and you will notice the price is actually twice as high for a big mac in China that it is in the US.

@Mike-fn4ti No the UN standard is 1.90 dollars a day but China's national set poverty line is 0.9 dollars a day. They are not going by the UN standard they have their own standard which is much lower. That is the whole point when China says they have no more poverty they are talking about their own poverty line not the international poverty line.

Chinese companies are already moving factories outside China to Vietnam, so is other international companies it's just a matter of time before Vietnam is the new factory of the world. Even their Premier Li Keqiang has said 600 million working Chinese get less than 140 dollars a month. It's a rich country with poor people. Good luck getting cheaper labor in America with their new 15 dollar minimum wage lol,

@DineshTwanabasu No the average income of the top Chinese cities are not 1400 dollars :/ Beijing and Shanghai are the top in average income in China and that number is nowhere near 1400 dollars. If you are talking about tier 2 Chinese cities then the average income is not even HALF of 1400 dollars. You really seem to have no idea about what life is like in China. Of course you can get much more in rural areas for 140 dollars (You can't even afford food for a month in a city with that salary) but you would still be considered poor and probably have to share a small apartment with some people.
1
@DineshTwanabasu Well each province will announce the average salary for every city around June or July every year you can check those numbers yourself. Perhaps you are basing your assumption of what average Chinese people make based on what your Chinese contacts personally earn. I am pretty sure you mean Guangzhou never heard of a city named guanzou in China.

@xxxcool2565 You can ask him why he said that and why he thought that was a problem. A satisfying meal for 2-3 RMB? You can only get a single bowl of rice for that money I would hardly call that satisfying but hey if you can only afford one bowl of rice for a full day then I guess it's better than nothing.

@xyliu00 I spent a year in China working as a volunteer in the poor provinces of China. I have been to towns and villages without electricity, nobody has a car and people are lucky if they can afford a motorbike. They use the same farming equipment like they did 300 years ago. We always brought food and water with us - really nice people but they were starving. So while I do realize that life in the urban cities in China is quite advanced I have seen some very poor people in China and I just don't like it when you try to pretend they are not there by changing a few statistical parameters. They are still there you just figured out a way to hide them in statistic bs.

@freedombro haha.... how do you think all these Chinese guys are replying to me and how all western companies operate in China? It's called a VPN it's nothing new - most western companies will provide their foreign staff with one as it's essential to communicate with the outside world.

@xxxcool2565 India, Nigeria or Sudan does not claim they have no people in poverty though. They admit poor people exist in their country.
1
@xxxcool2565 You are incorrect, I just simply criticize the CCP for using manipulation of statistics to try to hide the fact that poverty is a real problem in China. I am quite aware that criticizing the CCP greatly offends some Chinese people, to be fair though some of them are 五毛s working for the CCP though. I am sorry if you are Chinese and your feelings were hurt.

@xxxcool2565 There are plenty of sources to find about Li Keqiang talking about 600 million Chinese with less than 140 dollars. You can use youtube, how about just doing a simple google search?

@xxxcool2565 I have been very careful to make a distinction between the government, country and it's people. I got no beef with China or Chinese people. I spent a year with an organization battling extreme poverty and providing basic education to children on the Chinese countryside. I am not going to apologize for calling out the CCP for trying to cover up ugly truths by manipulating statistics.

@xxxcool2565 I said criticize, not hate. My original post was confirming to the OP that the standard of what counts as extreme poverty was changed and that he was correct in his assessment. Of course the CCP can set whichever standard they want and make any claim they want, if I agree or not agree with it is irrelevant. I am however free to claim their "elimination of poverty" is just a result from changing statistical parameters and doesn't reflect the actual situation on the ground. It's not like they are the only ones doing it, we call it cooking the books or stats-padding back home. I have no problem calling out my native country in specific areas where I feel like they are trying to hide ugly truths by clever use of statistics to hide problems or save face.
