  1. Yeah it's normal to protect your family, you stop the threat. Sometimes that means the bad guy dies, I am not sure what you expect. Not everyone are well-trained marksmen and can place well aimed shots in stressful situations. You stop the threat and if he or she dies so be it - you have every right to protect your family the guy was not charged he was well within his rights to protect his family.

  2.  @defyzx It doesn't work like that, you cannot know what his intention are and if he is armed or not until after the fact, what do you expect? If you try to break into someone's home in a state with stand your ground laws you are just asking for it.
