Interesting view, it depends on how you live life and what you count as a gamble. For me renting, if a gamble, is a really small gamble. Buying a house would be an even bigger gamble in my mind anyway, sure the prices are on the rise today.. but tomorrow.. next year? Nobody really knows, right? How about the financial crisis, a lot of people lost their houses during that time, just take a look at the Detroit housing market it's still in recovery 10 years later.
By buying a house you will also ground yourself to that area, or city and make you less likely to take that awesome job offer. Moving out can be a big hassle, drain time and cost money to get the house sold and find a new one. Taking time off to travel can also be a problem since you have a mortgage to pay off. A good compromise would be to rent it out to somebody but that can be a gamble on it's own if you don't know the person.
All that being said yeah to each his own, I haven't stayed in the same place for more than 1 year the last 6 years so I guess you can understand why I'm on the other side of the spectrum. If I would have bought an apartment or house in my 20s I would probably had had to stay in the same city or even area paying that mortgage off month by month all the way to retirement. By no means saying it's a bad thing but just not my cup of tea.
