This is a poor argument, and is at best an argumentum ad dictionarium. function is a term in common usage with many connotations, and even you are correct about the mathematical denotation of the word, that doesnt change the fact that the common connotation is absolutely nothing like what you said in your comment. a function can be as simple as a defined group of code you can call with parentheses. you may not like that definition, but thats just as valid a use of the word as any other and is far more common and likely to be the meaning when the word is referenced

@KenOtwell the problem is these meanings vary. in some languages, a function is a stand alone group of defined functionality, where a method is a part of a class. I agree with and quite enjoy the functional definition, but we need to acknowledge that there are different connotations of these terms, and that they are also valid. they may be more ambiguous and less useful true, but they are valid and common connotations nonetheless
