  3. These buildings were built as businesses-- to make money. They were not built as monuments for the public to look at. If you have a business and look for office space these buildings have small floors and many columns. Unless you have a small business they make no sense because they are difficult to lay out and employees need to travel on the elevators too much to see co-workers. That's why the Empire State Building has always had small businesses. Such a famous building but here has never been a nationally known company headquartered there. The very old ones had few restrooms. I have seen floor plans where the ladies rooms were on alternate floors because when they were built women didn't work in office buildings
