  2. This was before the Reformation. There were some sects but most people were either "Pagans" or Christians with the Pope as their leader.

  7. The Pope wanted to fabricate a reason to get the aggressive plundering Knight groups out of his area of control and send them away to fight some other groups. Ideology and religion were excuses, not reasons.

  8.  @5mm836  The aggression was also driven by the need for more land (i.e. food) by groups with expanding populations. Historians now thing the European invasion by the Huns in the 5th century was the result of an extreme drought in Asia. The Huns went west looking for food and water. They didn't ask for them politely.
