  3. In 2016 he said he would "self-fund" his campaign so he would not owe favors to big donors. His supporters made a big deal about his independence from "money interests". Then donors came in and he took out his funds from the Committee treasury, saying the money had only been a "loan". From that point on he contributed nothing to the Campaign Committee and relied exclusively on outside donors, many very large like Robert Mercer and Sheldon Adelson, who together contributed over $50M. He made a practice of selling Trump merchandise and using Trump real estate facilities and charged the Committee above-market rates. So in the end, instead of being "self-funded", as represented, he was 100% outside funded from "money interests" and made a profit on the campaign.
