Or no American would buy any foreign goods, which would mean the governement would have no tax revenue. So no government, no President, Congress, military, etc. etc.

@Gretabpooh The biggest "resource" is cheap labor. That's why manufacturing left the country. I think it started with clothing. Americans couldn't afford to pay the prices of American made clothing. It's still true. Telling the American middle class that it will cost twice as much to clothe their family but "they are buying American" won't fly.

@Gretabpooh There was pent up demand under Covid. When it ended there was an inflationary wave of spending. Travel is the best example. Once people felt safe to travel you could get rooms at resorts or flights. People went back to restaurants. Instead of gym shorts people wanted new clothing.

@JudyStroyer-bk6fb The governmnet that existed before the income tax was nothing at all like the government today. Today we have social security, medicare, medicaid, a military with planes costing $1B a pop, national infrastructure programs to build bridges and roads, and a multi-trillion dollar national debt to service. Lower income Americans are dependent on cheap merchandise and clothing from overseas. They do not buy to support any overseas company, but just to survive. Those people are incapable of spending more just to support US companies. If Trump imposes a 100% tariff on their necessitites you will see an increase in crime.
