Rights.... to have slavery legal. That was really the only important one at the time.

@majormattmason8408 Yeah, sure. The right of states to have legal slavery. What other right was at issue? It was also the reason why Northern Mexico seceded and became "Texas". The slave owners feared that Mexico was about to make slavery illegal.

@majormattmason8408 Not according to South Carolina, the first state to attempt to secede. They specifically said the reason was slavery.

@majormattmason8408 All of these concerns about the federal government becoming too powerful all go back to the fact that the "Right" the southern states wanted to protect from federal intusion was the "right" to have slavery legal. Period.

@Panimal98 Right to have slavery legal.

@alarmservicepros He went to war because he was attacked. The South struck first. His priority was to preserve the Union, but with slavery abolished.

@tirdkat6104 What do you think started the war, if not the threat that the federal government was going to outlaw slavery. Slave owners were irate that they would lose the prinicipal assets of their businesses and were going to have to pay a normal wage to people to work. Southerners stood to lose $Millions. Was there something else more important?

They never say which right, namely the "right" to keep slavery legal at a time when the federal government was considering abolishing the practice?

@jstravelers4094 The Republicans want to bring back discrimination. Destroying affirmative action was step one. Next will come "separate but equal" schools. Only they are never "equal".

@alarmservicepros nope what?

The Republicans talk about limiting federal intrusion on states' rights. The Civil War was fought because the Federal government intented to interfere with the State laws on slavery, by abolishing slavery at the federal level. The southerners were angry because how dare Washington tell them what to do with their "property".

@DheRadman Slaves were expensive and necessary for the operation of Big Cotton in the South. The most wealthy and influencial people in the Southern States faced enormous financial loss. That sounds like the primary cause to me, not some vague "states rights" that does not mean "the right to own slaves".

AlwaysWankershim I think he meant "legally" secede. Insurrectionists don't care about laws. They use violence to get what they want.
1
Mexico was about to abolish slavery so these northern Mexicans (who died so courageously at The Alamo) went to war and seceded from their country to form "Texas".

Maybe some states want to go back to separate schools, bathrooms etc. for "colored". You know, a states right kind of thing.

That's as clear as can be!
