Originally Heroin was the trade name for a morphine substitute sold by Bayer (of aspirin fame). It was marketed as the miracle "non-addictive" substitute for morphine. Just as Oxycodone was supposed to be "non-addictive". They are all chemically related and made from the opium poppy (I believe). Morphine was the original. It was used on the wounded in the American Civil War. Those who survived their wounds often found they were addicted to morphine.

Today you can get hydrocodone cough syrup. By prescription. It's very effective.

Some of the tar-like "opium" back then was actually hashish. So I've been told.
