In 1975, right out of college, I lived in a slumish walk-up "one bedroom" with the shower stall in the kitchen and the kitchen sink was also the bathroom sink, so keep those dishes washed. Little room for the toilet. I had mice, rats and roaches and lived over a pizza restaurant to the place was over heated. Broken window never fixed, so cardboard cover in winter. One 15 amp fuse, so no air conditioner possible. It was $400/mo, cheaper than any of my friends' places. I always thought it was dirt cheat (but really a slum) I just checked and adjusted for inflation that's $2,280 in today's dollars. This place is not much more and it's clean and "respectable". No separate toilet room. No plaster falling down. It's a great apartment for a young person starting out. New York is a city of opportunity. I found mine.
