@felixthecat2786 These buildings used to be rent controlled tenaments housing low income people. Four apartments/ floor. Rents were under $300/mo. Some had large kitchen sinks that doubled as baths. Toilet was in a separate room down the hall, shared with the other three apartments. Tenants were all bought out to move (or died). Cookie cutter cheap conversions to house young people, often NYC college students, whose parents pay the rent.

Your share would be one-third. Average wages in NYC are above those in Texas. Starting salary for new lawyers at big NYC firms is over $200K. So not apples to apples.

Or your parents are willing to pay it.

@TheOldTapeArchive It was just an example. Average wages in NYC aer higher than in most of Texas. A $200K lawyer is 25 years old with a big student loan. I doubt he would live here though.

@AdrienneMint New York's lower east side was all walk ups. Walking up those stairs all your life is good for your heart and legs. The old people seemed to cope. Today we're spoiled. In earlier times you had to walk up daily with coal for the fireplaces and bring the ashes down later. Same thing with blocks of ice for the "Ice box".

@AdrienneMint Two 'real New Yorker'! Most viewers here don't seem to be from NYC. I lived in NYC apartments from 1970 (actually a dorm) until 2015 when I decided I finally needed less 'excitement'. The first ten years were spent in gritty places that today's young people would not find at all acceptable. I was there today. Looks great. The people who say it's now full of crime just sound jealous. Compared to the 1970's-1990's today's crime rate is nothing. People should watch "Taxi Driver" to see what NYC was about before they made Times Square into another Orlando theme park. It's was real and it was the greatest!

Five story walk up? Welcome to Amsterdam. At least they have a hoist bar at the roof so furniture can be hoisted up and throught the window.

@AdrienneMint No, of course not. I was commenting on the late 1800's (post 1880) when the tenements were (and most still are) walk ups of up to 5 stories. No one should have to walk up 29 stories, although some NYers did that during the 2 blackouts.

@AdrienneMint I like the 42 St/Times Sq. pawn shops with strange stuff like Ninja weapons, along with guitars and camera. there was an arcade that blatantly advertised fake ID's. Rpiley's Believe It or Not. Tad's Steakhouse. ShowWorld and cheaper porno joints. Danger was in the air. In 45 years no one ever tried to mug me. Never carried a weapon, just walked in the light with other people around. Most people here are stunned that NYC prices are not the same as Waco, but they never have been. It's nothing new. London and Tokyo are even more expensive. It's supply and demand. People from all over the world want to live in these cities because of what they have to offer. Not the same with Peoria or Waco, even though they are nice places to live.

@EmilyHandren Our friends would ring the bell at the street level. We had to throw the keys out the window to them so they could open the lobby door to get in. And then walk up to see us.
