The people you mention, teachers, police officers, firefighters, highway workers, store clerks, servers, do not live in the areas that Cash features. They live in areas with a much longer commute, or a lucky enough to "inherit" a rent controlled place from a dead relative. The New York Times once again has a Sunday jobs classified section. Four pages of tiny print. Most of the jobs are well over $100K, but require college, MBAs or several years programming experience. I saw one for a programmer that paid $250K+ for 3 years experience. Stay in school if you can.

@spiritofanu3112 The "average person" can't. These are people with mid-to high six figure salaries and bonuses. Or rich parents who pay for them. Or people willing to take the financial risk and personal inconvenience of having multiple roommates. The "average person" lives much further away from Manhattan and has a difficult daily commute. It's not easy being poor or even middle class, whatever that means today.

@XRXIXP The areas with the tall buildings are built on New York schist, bedrock. Many areas are on landfill. The area west of the Freedom Tower (formerly WTC) is built on landfill taken from the WTC excavation. But none of the island floats on water, if that's what you're implying. Rising sea levels are inundating Florida, New York and the rest of the world. The Greenland and Antarctica ice is melting due to rising ocean temperatures from the carbon greenhouse effect. That makes sea level rise.

NYC outdoor space is useless for 2/3rds of the year. Don't count it as "living space". The bigger roof gardens require lots of work lugging dirt, pots and trees/plants up there. You also need and irrigation system and possibly a weekly visit from a gardner to keep the plants alive and looking good. It's great, if you have the money.

That depends where in Florida. The mosquito-prone in-land areas maybe. In the fancy areas closer to the ocean houses are rented for $100K/mo with a minimum of four months. And these are not the big mansions right on the beach.

@sandramatthews2581 Not sure I understand your typos, but NYC is big. It's not just Manhattan. There are areas where you can rent for less, but your commute is difficult. You can certaily get much more for your money in other places, but in real estate that is a given.

@davidhunternyc1 Supposedly many of those empty condominiums are just owned as investments for non-US persons who want a safe haven for their wealth. Landlords can be greedy but some rent is better than none. I haven't really seen any bailouts for them. But they do go broke. Owning a rent controlled apartment house will put anyone in the 'poorhouse'.
