There will always be one who is late with the rent, or utilities or any other bill. He will insist he doesn't use as much electricity and always deny that he stole your food from the fridge. He will say with a straight face "I'm sure I bought that yogurt." He'll let his girlfriend move in, insists since she sleeps in the same bed he shouldn't pay more, even though she occupies the bathroom most of the morning and, like him, eats your food. He'll lose his job, not pay his share and blame it on the economy/government/banks, etc. so it's not his fault and you have to make up the difference or get evicted. The landlord and the utility company demand the entire rent, not each person's share.

@VladDImpala New housing does this too. They proclaim "Open Concept!" as if needing to put everything in one room is luxury! I think the brokers invented the term as a euphemism for small homes. Like being next to the noisy highway is "Close to transportation". When I was poor, we had a small home and the living room, dining area, kitchen were all open and contiguous. This was not luxury, it was necessity. Now that I can afford it I wouldn't dream of putting my kitchen in my living room. It's really ridiculous if you step back and think about it. They get the women on HGTV to say "I can see my kids play while I'm cooking" as if that's a thing. So put the toilet out there too so you can see your kids while your.............etc.

@thefaceofebony My experience was one lease. One person paid the rent, the others had to contribute. Same with utilities. Con Ed doesn't give one apartment three separate electic or gas bills.
