  1. In the 70's these Ave B apartments were super cheap rent often a shared toilet on the stair landing. You had your own sink for bathroom/kitchen. Gates on all windows. Heroin junkies on the streets. My friend used a padlock on the outside of his front door because the thieves came up the fire escapes and in windows, but needed to leave by the front door carrying their 'haul' (some old B&W TV or radio). This way they couldn't exit so they dropped the stuff and tried another place. Roaches and mice/rats everywhere. Laundry in the apartment? Go to the laundramat down the street. Plaster falling down. No closet. Lead paint. The pits. But that's what you did when you were starting out as an adult with an entry/no skill job and wanted to be independent. Today's youth wouldn't dream of living like that. They would just complain that there's no 'affordable housing'. We didn't assume that at age 20 'housing' meant the way we lived at home with our parents. Most of our parents didn't live so great when they were 20 either.
