Even more simple is the high mercury content. Just look up mercury poisoning. Ask your doctor to test for mercury at your next physical. You may be surprised. Most "big fish" have high mercury content.

@philipb2134 I agree. But for shorthand, a big fish like halibut is higher in heavy metals than smaller fish. If you get a reference list of fish that are safe to eat it's easier to remeber the few that are OK. And it's not just poisonous mercury. Cadmium and other toxic stuff gets in them. We stick to sole for now. Absolutely no tuna.

user-iy1vo2jf2q Or eating fish that eat the fish at the bottom of the ocean. Strangely, lobster and sole, bottom dwellers are both low or no Hg. I learned about the Hg problem because a friend tested high (over 20) in a blood test. High Mercury affects memory and cognitive abilities. Mercury poisoning is the "Mad Hatters" blight because Mercury was used to shape felt into hats. My wife and I got tested. I was OK but my wife was over 20 and in a second test 80!. She gave up all fish on the high Hg, or not safe to eat list and after 3 years she is in the normal range. If the problem is severe the docots use chelation treatment, but it has side effects. Rather than argue about what is good to eat try getting an Hg test as part of an annual physical blood work. Why speculate? And it seems some people process the food differently. I have never been high Hg, but I haven't had sushi or tuna salad in years.

@mursesherminator I relied on the blood tests given by my doctor. My wife had a problem with Hg.
