Well I posit that there are still people welding - instead they're building submarines and ships now instead of rocket engines. And consider too the engineers back then didn't have benefit of CAD or computers, they were learning it on the fly too. So could we build the F1's again - sure we could. We just need the political will to do so.

Not only did Apollo have an international network, components of the Apollo were pretty much made in every state in the U.S. For example, one of my uncles worked for EG&G Seal-all and designed some of the seals use on the command module here in RI.

Actually a number of variables have been filled in to the Drake equation.

And transistors are now down in the range of 16nm.

Oh and those IBM mainframes shown toward the end, were Packard Bell 250's - no relation to the piece of crap Packard Bell PC's of a later age.

And for extra credit, what does http and ftp mean?

And now we have parts of SDI protecting various parts of the globe. Interesting.

Oh I'm always amazed by the progress of computing technology. Consider my first computer got the job done with only 8 bits, now I'm using a machine with 8 times that. And I've been in the I.T. field for over 20 years.

When you consider the original Apollo mission hardware wasn't NASA built, they contracted to Boeing, North American, et al. So it's no surprise that NASA is looking at Space-X and Blue Origin.

And in a way we do have partially nuclear powered cars plying the roads today. You see nuclear power plants supply power to charge electric cars.
1
Actually I'd place the blame on NASA - they're the ones that pressured Perkin-Elmer to get it done.

And as to nuclear it still remains to be seen if it'll be fission or fusion. Big old project in the south of France right now called ITER might be the best way to go.

6 billion watts. Damn!

The funny about TGV it's built by Alstom - who also builds not only Amtrak's Acela but also the MBTA's commuter rail cars have been rehab'd by Alstom. And I do know the fastest part of the line runs through MA and RI. But they're looking to push the speeds of Acela to 150-200MPH.

MOSFET stands for Metal Oxide Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor.
