Here in Providence RI we don't have tunnels for cars oh no. We have four linear miles of tunnels below the city but it's used to store overflow sewage.

Well I know in Providence, RI Westminster Street was in the 1960's a pedestrian mall, then in the 70's traffic was allowed but then they narrowed the road and expanded the sidewalks in the 1980's.

Here's what it's like in Rhode Island - I-95 to be specific. I can recall when I was young the entirety of that highway was marked at 70MPH. Now the speed limit varies depending on where you are. For example from Provdience north to Pawtucket the speed limit goes from 55 to 50 to 45 in about a 2 mile stretch. On a highway with 3 lanes - each 12 feet wide. So 36 feet in inches is 432 inches - way past arterial etc. In fact the only reason our speed limits are set so low is that it's used for revenue enhancement and nothing more. Now go south on I-95 - it's 55MPH until you hit around Exit 9 then rises to 65MPH. Try doing 55 on that highway - just try it. i've gotten a vehicle up to 100MPH on it a few times but average speed are between 60 and 75MPH. And where I live - on street is necessary. Why? Because the part of the city I live in was built between 1840 and 1900. Before cars were widespread.

I can think of one possibility. They convert to electric charging stations. Maybe it becomes a place where you sit in your car and have your breakfast or lunch or dinner delivered to your car. That'd make sense.

Oh hell the city I live in Providence, RI - Westminster St. downtown has been a pedestrian mall, then not, then a mall again then not. And the first mall in the U.S. was here, it's called the Arcade. This is Westminster in 1968: http://blogphotos.flyingdreams.org/riprovidence.jpg

Interestingly here in Rhode Island we're so damned small it doesn't make any sense we don't have rail connecting every city like Pawtucket, Providence, Cranston, Warwick. In fact back in the day we had tracked and trackless trolleys in the area. That all got scrapped and we got shit ass buses.

Have to do a few conversions. But RI is #2 most densely populated state. However when I do the math - it comes out to 15 people per acre. So we get jacked with buses that suck in this state. But up until the 1940's and 50's we had a streetcar network. It got torn out in favor of buses. Blame GM, Goodyear and Standard Oil for that one.
