  1. One thing that annoys me about Dutch urban design is the workshop feature. Apartment complexes that have garage-like spaces in the lower floor meant for people to do some artisan craft in. The result is that within these neighbourhoods there's always people using loud heavy machinery, sawing wood, cutting stone, drilling metal, sanding anything. It's no longer quaint carpenters chipping and hand-sawing a piece of wood, it's all loud and obnoxious without any apparent value to the actual neighbourhood. Separate workshop zones would make far more sense in this case.

  2. Rietveld designed a few of these neighbourhoods in Utrecht. And his idea has been copied throughout the country. I'm not blaming him of course, he never anticipated these workshops to scale up in machinery this way.
