I empathise with the principles. However there are some countries that Americans consider 'big state' that have comparable or even less public spending per GDP. These countries are getting much more bang for their taxes. These countries run like clockwork compared to the US. They have a well-functioning welfare state and outperform the US on every quality of life measurement. So clearly this discussion isn't just about proportion between private and public in a quantitative sense. Americans are getting qualitatively the short end of the stick as well. Which explains their distrust in government. Yet at the same time it's this distrust in government that may be a factor in it being such a bloated and deficient bureaucracy as well.
