The reason cancel culture is so effective is because any time someone has been dubiously cancelled and it seems the outrage mob overplayed their hand, they can simply dig deeper into that person's past to find more evidence of that person being deserving of being cancelled. It puts their entire life on trial in front of a public tribunal. Journalists get to perform spectacular mental acrobatics writing articles lawyering and framing to retroactively justify the cancellation and they only have to do it until the mob loses interest and moves on to the next person.
