Don't want to defend the bulldozer parents entirely because it's still not the right way to go about things. HOWEVER the consequences of screwing up young are far bigger today than they were back then. Sleeping through a lecture and flunking a class were typical student antics back then but these days it means your student debt stacks higher. Parents also understand the impact your first job has for the rest of your career and they're terrified their children are getting locked out of this rat race before they understand the implications themselves. If I were a parent to this age I'd probably be either home-colleging them or send them to a trade school. Getting them to pick a discipline they like and then sit through the online material requires to acquire that skill means a lot of involvement but at least I know they'r e racking up credit card debt in a frat bar.
