As a non-native speaker that knows four other languages I can say that English is by far the most elegant, efficient and versatile way of expressing yourself. All other European languages are either too simplistic or too convoluted to get anywhere near English. So I say, butcher your languages, English is beautiful.

Natheniel Becken Chinese is one of the worst examples. It's an unbelievably bloated language yet completely stunted at the same time. Mandarin is the result of centuries of cultural isolation.

Kyle Clements The writing system is incredibly efficient but the language itself is highly crude, it leaves very room for nuance and subtleness.

mygoldentruth Dutch is a truly ugly language though. I know many famous dutch poets and writers are fapping over it. Still I keep being amazed at the amount of words that don't have an equally meaningful translation in Dutch. The reverse also sometimes happens, but only for really unimportant words. That's what I like about English the most, it has a lot of subtly alternate synonyms for the words you end up using the most. That allows you to 'bend' your sentences in exactly the right according to what you mean and feel.

LadyShahdMD I said English is better than any other language. If there are better languages then I'm accepting suggestions but as for now, being well versed enough on most other common languages I can easily say, drop that stupid mother language and accept a more sophisticated one. Treating it like a precious little piece of culture is actually harmful. Language is more than just words. Language determines how we communicate, express and even think about ourselves. If you're not able to think in specific ways simply because your backwards language doesn't allow you to, then you're being impeded in your development. The only people who really care about their own language are those that aren't capable of speaking any other.

Global Rain Dutch. And sure study other languages, it's a great mental pursuit and it will only improve your communicative skills. Best of all, you will all the more learn to appreciate the intricacies of English.

LadyShahdMD And TCBeads point is that not all languages are equal. If I were to magically change my family's language into English, then I would, we would be much better able to communicate. Don't change to English because you can. Change to English because it's way better than anything else. And if there's a language that's even better than English then I'm all for hearing it.
