America's two party politics yield extremely weird results. In Europe the Evangelical Christians are pretty liberal and progressive on socio-economic issues but have a conservative stance on marriage, abortion and euthanasia. BUT because in most countries they have their own party with seats in the parliament, they don't have to chose. In the US the Evangelicals vote Republican because their faith compels them to give priority to abortion and euthanasia. All the other agenda points are rendered irrelevant. Now in the US the Evangelicals are a huge voter influence. If they did have their own party (like in European countries) then Republicans would only be a very small minority in an American parliament. In other words, Repubnlicans are only a large party because they're holding the Evangelical vote hostage. Such a party would side on a lot of social reform and on strong environmental policies, just not on the traditional Christian issues like abortion. Still the overall result would be a huge gain in an accurate political representation of the country. I think that's an interesting topic to consider for a talk Rubin.
