  1. I took that "smallpox" scene as them being pariahs, cast out at the edge of civilisation, and they needed some visual illness to convey they were in fact sick. I don't think it was meant to make a point about smallpox specifically, and that would indeed be stupid. Unless the girl and her mom are meant to be some kind of herald conveying what is to come. But then the movie did a terrible job at making it appear as a hallucination. Too grounded and multiple characters responding to it.
