russia did throw men willy nilly into a cauldron. russians also had blocking forces who did execute soldiers who retreated.

@robowisanveithasung6022 Order No. 227 stipulated the capture or shooting of cowards and panicked troops at the rear by blocking detachments, 1,000 troops shot and 24,993 sent to penal battalions within the first 3 months of the order in 1941. So most were captured and sent to penal battalions but those fleeing arrest or who where too panicked to comply were shot on the spot.

@robowisanveithasung6022 Well that's what they recorded. Not quite like the movie. Though that's a little before stalingrad. From Germany declaring war to Japanese peace that's 50 months 11 days. The exact numbers of those shot are estimated to be much higher then Soviet records show.

@robowisanveithasung6022 that's fair, the manchuria campaign was an impressive feat. Though even today russia is accused of using blocking troops, to keep conscript and prisoners In check. According to at least 1 intercepted phone call they have been ordered "shoot to kill those who resist arrest". So the tradition is still around to some degree.
