what are you talking about?? we do exist in the philippines and macau... nobody ever wonder why philippines has a president surnamed Quezon before? Quezon is literally a hispanicized hokkien chinese word used as a surname.... manuel quezon himself had mostly chinese mestizo father and a spanish mestiza mother. now the most populous city of the philippines is Quezon City and a pretty big province in luzon is Quezon province....

@ErikPT that is simply wrong. historically, most mestizos in the philippines were chinese mestizos, mixed with hokkien chinese usually. the japanese mestizos are rare and they mix with us chinese mestizos before.

hey hey hey, technically mixed spanish-chinese did exist in the philippines, we called them tornatras or mestizos de sangley (chinese mestizos)

@justarandomcommenter570 yeah i am a christian chinese filipino. we are mostly christian, whether catholic or protestant and some are buddhist or taoist or mazuist and sometimes its syncretized with the christian faith.

thanks for describing my people's history and part heritage i guess.... im a chinese filipino myself and there are also some chinese mestizo descendants who also had a spanish admixture from previous centuries.... i mean look at president manuel quezon.... that's literally him.... his dad is a chinese mestizo, his mom is a spanish mestiza....

nah, the main difficulty before was with spanish G, like in taiwan's cape santiago where santiago became Sam-tiau in taiwanese hokkien chinese. also many chinese in the philippines before were great at spanish or some had a local spanish-hokkien-tagalog pidgin historically called la lengua del parian or caló chino español

this video is so surprised by the concept of spanish-chinese intermarriage and christian chinese. my goodness, it happened in the philippines. im chinese filipino and i know people that are also chinese filipino or chinese mestizo descendant and some of them have or supposedly have spanish blood too from before and yes we are mostly christian, whether protestant or catholic.

@Katzeleben6028 i imagine it would go like how some jesuit priests went to china before and ministered in mandarin like matteo ricci. when the spaniards christianized hokkien merchant migrant folk in the philippines in the late 1500s and throughout the 1600s, there were certain spanish loanwords related to religion that got pronounced in hokkien and written in chinese characters like Jesus was 西士 (Se-sū) before in early manila hokkien from Latin "Jēsū" which J was pronounced by spaniards before like Sh /ʃ/ so they adopted that before. u can see more in the Manila Incunabula by piet van der loon

@alstjrqkr689 yes its basically us chinese filipinos and chinese mestizo descendants in the philippines..... i mean some of our local chinese cuisine are literally named in spanish..... like chorizo de macau, asado = 叉燒, etc. etc.

technically, the spaniards in ph did try to colonize tamsui and keelung in northern taiwan but they had to abandon it due to being too overstretched in budget

tbh historically, it was not reciprocated by the japanese. the japanese often threatened to sack spanish manila and kick out the spaniards from the philippines, which they basically tried to do instead to the americans when they invaded during ww2

@royasturias1784 Rizal's great great grandfather is originally surnamed Lamco (南哥) with the original chinese surname being 柯 which these days is written as Cua. also their family is not just 1/4 or 1/8, they are more like a little over half chinese, then 1/8 spanish, 1/16 japanese and the remaining native blood

@JahNuhThunDeeTheOneAndOnly uummmm as a chinese filipino, there were indeed chinese people walking around the philippines speaking spanish.... it is the reason why we have a few spanish loanwords in our hokkien chinese in the philippines.... i even have pdf copies of 2 historical spanish-hokkien dictionaries, namely the Dictionario Hispanico Sinicum and Arte de la lengua chio chiu....

@justarandomcommenter570 yes, i am a chinese filipino, our philippine hokkien has a few spanish loanwords like pá-lâ (把拉) from spanish "paga", lé-chu-chhài from spanish "lechugas", 霸薯 pà-chî from spanish "patatas", sap-bûn from spanish "jabon/xabon", ka-pé from spanish "café", go-ma-ôe and go-ma-thn̂g from spanish "goma", etc. etc.

nah they facilitated trade with china mainly using hokkien chinese merchant intermediaries in the philippines before to fujian province of china. the actual people on the ground were mostly hokkien sangley chinese merchants and native filipino sailors while the spaniard was an armchair general
