  1. imperial names were sacred in east asia. socially speaking, people weren't allowed or it was taboo to even name your child with the same name or even character as the imperial ruler

  2. the treaty of tordesillas discouraged them. colonizing the philippines and spreading to northern taiwan and trying to capture parts of the moluccas spice islands were already a stretch they made in relation to that, just for the sake of getting a cut from both the east asian and spice trade. australia as an arid wasteland back then was an even bigger venture to dedicate more into. they could've expanded at the northern parts of australia if only they were more successful at taking the spice islands, which they did kick the portuguese out but the dutch soon got it

  5. i thought it was because laws were penned in the name of a monarch so then the next monarch with the same name would not have to change the laws penned in the previous monarch's name. he would then inherit those laws before that abide under his name
