  2. its normal in many asian countries that small talk is not the norm and more of the exception at least in my country. people almost never talk to someone they dont know unless its for the explicit reason of asking for directions. im from a country directly south of japan in southeast asia

  4. basically, strange/abnormal = bad that's how the japanese mindset works its even embedded in the language. the way japanese usually comment about something bad is to comment that it is strange/weird (変 [へん])
