  1.  @gavinpotter8741  chinese is not just one language. this is an old misconception of people about how linguistics works. Chinese (a.k.a. Sinitic) is an entire language family or referring to the writing script, which itself is either the traditional one or the simplified one. "Standard Chinese" is what the governments of china, taiwan, and singapore try to call what the official version of mandarin basically is, but in reality, what they call standard chinese is just the Beijing dialect of the Mandarin chinese language. Cantonese is an entirely different chinese language. it would be laughable to say that cantonese is a dialect of mandarin nor mandarin is a dialect of cantonese. for those living in china, it's no problem for them cuz they use different terms to call it there, but the english translation of that has long been mistaken. these are not called "dialects" simply because they are not a country's official language. a language still exists even if it doesnt become an official language of a country.
