there are large pockets of christians in indonesia and malaysia too. philippines also has some muslims.
83
lol malaysia and singapore aren't the only places with chinese minorities. both philippines and indonesia also have chinese filipinos and chinese indonesians
25
the manila-acapulco galleon trade actually primarily existed because it was the spanish transition point with trade with china to go to the philippines, then to mexico, then spain. so the realistic answer to a future new manila-acapulco trade is basically a china belt and road initiative silk road again, but with its direction towards china's east, rather than just to the west. philippines has always been called the gateway to asia... from the east
23
@heri9949 tagalogs? lol the real movers of philippine politics are the mestizo political families who just so happens to speak philippine english and filipino/tagalog
19
@heri9949 its around 23 million christians in 2010 census of which some regions are proportionally more than others. about 29 million non-muslims to 207 million muslims
18
after thousands of years of egyptian civilization, perhaps egypt will learn to not majorly rely on the nile river

13
where is California?
12
@shadowwarrior2030 lol duterte is also a mestizo. he keeps repeating it like hes proud of himself lol. it just so happens he looks more native and also speaks davaoeño cebuano bisaya, besides philippine english, and filipino/tagalog. it takes another political family to get in and do things in ph politics, since theres so much patronage politics and political families to work through. duterte family are just the lords of davao.

@heri9949 its funny what you assume. in filipino/tagalog, "malay" or "malaya" does not refer to a people. "malay" literally means consciousness and "malaya" is an adjective meaning free or independent. there are no wannabe malays in ph, only malaysians who want to hog "malay" to themselves, but that's why it got renamed to "malaysia" than "malaya". lol ph is diverse and not only inhabited by lowland austronesian groups. many are also mixed mestizos of which the most common are mixed chinese mestizos and a rare few legitimate spanish mestizos and these days, there are also many chinese filipinos, and a few japanese filipinos, korean filipinos, filipino americans, filipino canadians, etc.

hur dur sweden overpowered paradox so swedish huehuehue prussian earrape
8
meanwhile in the philippines, "Estancia" is just some rich people mall in metro manila
8
the effort put into the mandarin pronunciations is very much appreciated!
7
Nusantara is too indonesia-centric. "Malaya" is a term that crosses boundaries which works in both philippines and malaysia. "malaya" means free and independent in filipino. malaysians just stole the word to name their country before

France: Honhonhonhonhonhonhonhonhonhon

yes yes more missiles, more submarines, more trains, more everything

Philippines and Indonesia were always the masterminds to Asean
5
lol culturally different my ass hahaha. as if maphilindo is supposed to be made in the image of a muslim malay state. that's where the assumption will not hold up. all maphilindo states from philippines, malaysia, singapore, brunei, indonesia can function secularly together without it being about any ethnic group and it will still be a workable concept. also the others are only "poor" because all the other countrysides have to be factored in when the large metropolises can be as rich as singapore and brunei

@heri9949 lol look who's pretending to be smart here. i dont care what you consider to be some sort of corruption. if it was really from that, why didnt they name it federation of melayu, so of course they realized all that mess and whatever corruption shit it is. so now, it's named "malays" + "-ia". "-ia" is latin or greco-roman like all the placename suffixes they keep using around europe and then around the east indies
4
@dwargonedragon794 this was not about who is called "malay". it was about a country being called "Malaya". Also, ph is not just tagalogs lol and they are not even the real ones controlling ph government. there are many placenames in the country that use the term malay like around panay island and mindanao. tho, as I said, there is a different word with different meaning in ph languages for "malay" and "malaya". there are just many homonyms, just like there is also a "bisaya" and "batak" present in the philippines and malaysia and indonesia. there are also cognate words and placenames that now mean differently and now used for places around borneo and in the philippines, like sibu, cebu, etc.

Algeria broke free. french vassals of french africa can too!

@MoManthepoet the yanks have been kicked out long since ww2 and american bases were turned into commercial ports and airports. the US is just a means to protect the region. china, japan, india are the big heavyweights that could actually threaten sovereignty in asean and have lasting demographic change than a far away european empire that cannot realistically integrate us lol. taiwan had the same history as spanish and dutch colonial possession, yet being near china and japan drew their fates. if taiwan got withered away and turned into a chinese state, whats stopping the next peripheries from being transformed as well?
4
@shadowwarrior2030 who gets to rule a place by force in this day and age? lol if u ever rule a place, of course u try so hard to make sure the places loves u and reelects u every time. thats why u get to rule them, cuz they love being under u and want u to keep ruling. lol also, "filipino" is a nationality and includes everyone in the country and not just of lowland catholic austronesian descent. one can be Filipino, regardless if one is not tagalog or cebuano or ilocano or ilonggo or bikolano or etc.
4
is he pronouncing those place names right. i feel he is really off there

if you're serious about wanting a geopolitics video about the philippines, you might have to start paying to get into his patreon to get some voice into his video suggestion polls. also shirvan might not need to show everyone every bit of philippine history just to properly produce a geopolitical analysis of the philippines. his main concern with the philippines is its position with china and the US, especially on the south china sea dispute which he finds that ph is lacking on the armed forces front. plus, of course, its not just all about territorial disputes with china or even sabah with malaysia or palmas island with indonesia, ph also has internal issues with communist insurgents agitating for leftist ideals and regionalist secession and of course, radicalized islamic groups transiting from malaysia and indonesia supporting muslim secessionist groups
4
lol europe and africa has more border gore. in maritime southeast asia, its simply just the sea thats the border except of course for the border between malaysia and indonesia and the border between malaysia and brunei. besides those two, the sea is just the border.
4
@IxyunChai it has nothing to do with ancient historical linguistic influence. naming states is a political move from the main political actors of that time, in which in this case was during the late 20th century when the policymakers of what would become malaysia were facing the hungry neighbors of philippines and indonesia. what could be better than using a pan-ethnic name that can encompass even more than modern malaysia to compete against its direct neighbors? of course, later they saw it futile and reverted to "malaysia"...

just ensure to build the bridge higher... if they dont, then they could renovate it in the future when Neum becomes a big port that needs bigger ships to go into if the bosnian side is determined to make Neum into a big port, they will incur costs anyways if they avoid higher cost now
3
as someone who grew up studying mandarin chinese. no, shirvan's pronunciation of mandarin chinese names in the province names are actually alll still mostly mistaken. he has not distinguished the differences of the pinyin system with the english alphabet. letters B and P are not the same mandarin pinyin and the english alphabet, likewise letters G and K and also letters D and T.... and likewise, most other letters in the pinyin system are not the same with the letters in the english alphabet

all the superpower countries have empire-level territories

Spartly Islands?

oh its harder for protests to spring up in north korea. any protest that starts in a certain part of the country will never spread to any other part of the country because people are not allowed to travel without government permission so any protest that happens doesnt spread and just get shot at then any specific person who committed a crime will be publicly executed with everyone around required to watch even as a child
3
@John_Smith__ netherlands and spain successfully stole portuguese territories in indonesia lol, leaving only east timor alive. thats why indonesia has so many portuguese loanwords
3
@Zim___ so the British thought of it? why didn't they just say "Federation of Melayu" rather than butchering up the pronunciation and telling everyone there this is now what we will call your country
2
@metallicshah your malay language influence is a relic of the past almost a thousand years ago. the spread of tagalog around the philippines can be observed by the numerous loans all the other ph languages have loaned throughout the centuries and austronesian linguists like blust himself uses this when comparing austronesian roots in the area. tho anyways, countrynames does not have anything to do with the natural social or trade influence of languages because countrynames are more of a political nature. malaysia was formed only some decades ago in late 20th century when both philippines and indonesia were already formed. they changed the country name to Malaysia rather than keeping Malaya cuz they saw the conflict to whoever thought of the name that was supposed to come from Melayu.

so they became edgy
2
soon countries will mine resources from space
2
I'm suspecting you aren't, if not being sarcastic. he pronounced all the chinese names and placenames in this video the usual way people, who don't know how mandarin pinyin works, does, which is not accurate at all.
2
@hi4806 his name is Shirvan Neftchi. its literally in the end credits of each of his videos. hes from Baku, Azerbaijan.
2
that is where australia comes in to block it
2
@J lol they say the same thing in the Philippines, yet where tf does that "1%" or any of those percentages come from lol. who actually counts?
2
@riventv4927 probably around just 1/3 of the average urban filipino in the cities and towns. mestizos and chinese mestizos among assimilated filipinos are more commonly observable around the big cities, towns, and plantations before. theyve been intermixing for centuries that they will all still usually say theyre "filipino" whatever that specifically means to each person

@NUDZZZ says the child

meanwhile im sitting in the tropical far far away from europe without a care at all in any historical period that has anything to do with russians hehehehe
